Are Air Source Heat Pumps Noisy?

Heat pump noise is one of the most common concerns we hear. The short answer: modern heat pumps are quiet — quieter than many home appliances. Here’s what you need to know.

How Loud Is a Heat Pump?

Modern heat pumps are rated between 40 and 55 dB(A) at 1 metre. Here is what that means in context.

🔊

40–45 dB(A): Very Quiet

Premium models like the Vaillant aroTherm Plus operate at around 40 dB(A). This is comparable to a quiet library or a refrigerator hum. You would not hear it from inside the house.

🔉

45–55 dB(A): Moderate

Mid-range units operate at 45–55 dB(A) — similar to normal conversation or a desktop fan. This is noticeable if you are standing next to the unit, but not from inside the house or at the boundary.

🏠

In Practice

Heat pumps are quieter than a gas boiler flue, a tumble dryer, or an air conditioning unit. Most neighbours never notice them. Correct positioning is the most important factor in minimising noise impact.

Positioning to Minimise Noise

Where we place the heat pump has a bigger impact on perceived noise than the unit itself.

📍

Distance from Boundaries

Under Permitted Development rules, the heat pump must be at least 1 metre from your boundary. We position units as far from boundaries and windows as practical, which significantly reduces noise impact on neighbours.

🏠

Away from Bedrooms

We avoid placing the outdoor unit below bedroom windows. On south or east-facing walls, away from sleeping areas, the unit is barely perceptible even at night when ambient noise is lowest.

🏋

MCS Noise Assessment

MCS requires us to complete a noise impact assessment before installation. We calculate the expected noise level at your boundary and nearest neighbour’s window to confirm compliance.
