Is a Heat Pump Worth It in 2026?
With a £9,000 government grant available for oil and LPG homes, 2026 is arguably the strongest case yet for switching to a heat pump. Here’s the honest picture.
The short answer: For most Devon and Somerset homes currently on oil or LPG, yes — particularly from July 2026 when the BUS grant increases to £9,000. The grant effectively removes or greatly reduces the upfront cost for smaller to medium homes.
The financial case
The upfront cost of a heat pump installation (typically £8,000–£16,000 before grant) has historically been the biggest barrier. The BUS grant changes that picture significantly:
- Oil/LPG homes: £9,000 grant (from 21 Jul 2026) — many smaller homes have near-zero net cost
- Gas/electric homes: £7,500 grant
- No EPC requirement (removed April 2026)
- Heat pump tariffs (Cosy Octopus, Intelligent Octopus) can make running costs 30–40% cheaper than a standard electricity tariff
When a heat pump makes the most sense
✓ You’re on oil or LPG
The £9,000 grant is substantial and oil prices are volatile. A heat pump removes that price risk entirely.
✓ Your boiler is ageing
If you’d be replacing a boiler anyway, switching to a heat pump now locks in 20+ years of lower-carbon heating and avoids future boiler costs.
✓ You want to future-proof
Gas boilers are likely to be phased out for new builds and replacement sales over the coming decade. A heat pump is the long-term solution.
✓ You’re planning renovations
Adding underfloor heating or upgrading insulation at the same time maximises efficiency and minimises disruption.
When to hold off
A heat pump may not be the right fit right now if:
- Your home has very significant insulation or structural issues that need addressing first
- You’re planning to move within 2–3 years and can’t recoup the investment
- Your electricity supply needs significant upgrading (rare in Devon, but possible in very remote areas)
